“Our under vehicle inspection systems have set a consistent precedent throughout the world for being able to image the undercarriage of a vehicle in seconds and expediting inspection processes,” said Jesus Solis, Director of Business Development Mexico for Perceptics. “The last thing you want to do is create traffic delays for global dignitaries and guests and compromise security protocols,” Solis continued.

'Nutcracker' review: Oakland Ballet charms
Right from the start, with a mischief-filled pantomime scene that ends in a snowball fight before the Tchaikovsky Overture is through, artistic director Graham Lustig's staging of the holiday staple at the Paramount Theatre projects a playful but determined will to succeed. Demure, quietly magnetic and budding with romantic urges, Stephanie Salts' Marie is the glowing center of attention in the "Nutcracker's" mobile party scene. Even as her cantankerous brother Fritz (a tightly wired Cole Companion) rockets around the busy room wreaking havoc, Marie and several of the other girls train their attention on Marie's older cousin Vera (Chantelle Pianetta) and her Cadet beau (Bobby Briscoe). The Nutcracker Prince becomes a flesh-and-blood, make-believe man (the charming, innocently gallant Cameron Findley) with a quick sweep of Drosselmeyer's cape (the spry, imposingly tall Damon Mahoney plays the magically inclined uncle). Designer Zack Brown supplies a giant wilting cake and outsize fractured tea cup as bunkers for the warring parties. The Rat King (Marte Madera) stabs himself in the toe with his own weapon before meeting his end when brave Marie does him in with a giant table knife. The snow scene is at once fanciful, full of floating Snowmaidens and bulbous Snowball costumes, and tangible, with the slender, bending birch trees that materialize in the backdrop. Police Seize Nearly 2lbs of Heroin, Cash, BMW, TVs in Bust Patch Cranston, RI --

Cranston Policeext arrested two men and seized nearly two pounds of heroin after a routine traffic stop off Farmington Avenue last week.

The street value of the heroin was about $110,000.

According to police, Luis Marte, 34, of 151 Farmington Ave.; and Luis Fernandez, 26, of 70 Perkins Ave., were pulled over after police saw them driving a 2006 black BMW on Princess Avenue "committing traffic violations while displaying a suspended license."

The officers on patrol were Daniel Dempsey and Austin Smith. Smith, a rookie just three weeks out of the academyext, was being shown the ropes by Dempsey when they saw the BMW.

The suspects reportedly tried to flee police when Dempsy tried to stop them and they followed the BMW into the parking lot of Farmington Terrace Apartments, where Marte lives.

"The officers converged on the vehicle and would quickly discover that the reason the operator tried to flee, was because he and his passenger were in possession of a very large quantity of narcotics and cash," said Cranston Police Chief Col. Marco Palombo Jr.

In the parking lot, the suspects at first pretended to ignore the presence of police but "after they were given verbal commands to show their hands, the operator tried ot reach back into the vehicle, which heightened the officers' suspicions," Palombo said.

The passenger got out. He was holding a large brown bag against his stomach. He was ordered to drop it. Once the two suspects were in custody, police looked in the bag and found several large plastic sandwich bags filled with heroin.

Along with the drugs, police found $3,200 cash. The heroin was separated into four large bags, each containing about 100 to 200 grams of heroin with a combined weight of 696.4 grams — about a pound-and-a-half.

The large amount of drugs prompted the involvement of the Cranston Police Special Investigations Unit. They obtained a court warrant to search Marte and Fernandez's apartments.

At Ferndandez's apartment, police seized a 12 gauge shotgun. At Marte's apartment, they found another 116 grams of heroin, bringing the total amount of drugs seized to 812 grams — just under two pounds.

Police also seized scales, 55,000 individual baggies, the BMW, two Samsung smart TVs and a Mac computer, "all of which are subject to forfeiture as suspected proceeds of illegal drug trafficking activities."

Both men were charged with the manufacturing or possession with the intent to deliver heroin, 1 OZ to 1 KG and Fernandez, who was driving the suspect vehicle, was charged with an additional count of attempting to elude a police officer. Both men were arraigned and ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional facility where they are awaiting trial.  Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.

WDSU reports that the NFL's Clean Zone sign restrictions are limited to the Mercedes Benz Superdome area and no longer affect the French Quarter and Central Business District.

*Tuesday*: Media Day
It's Media Day, as indicated by the 47-foot po-boy in the Media Center. If you're Perez Hilton, and someone has to be, the city will be riddled with celebrity sightings. In the Hollywood of the South it's hard not to make a loop without seeing stars. We've run into the Jolie - Pitt family noshing at Verti Marte and I don't know what a sandwich photo is worth, but with all the photographers huddled outside the deli there's clearly a market for it.

Wednesday: Free Day

Speaking of sandwiches, Adam Richman has been in town all week shooting a Tailgate Takeover to air Wednesday on the Travel Channel. Adam's another regular likely to have a French Quarter pied-à-terre sooner or later. Once here, celebrities tend to flee when an influx arrives. As Midwestern transplant Tennessee Williams was known to complain: "Too many goddamn tourists." To see tourists up close, this is as good a day as any to check out Bourbon Street. Bringing a full-body sized container of hand sanitizer couldn't hurt. If, despite your best efforts, if you find yourself with a party rash stop by the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. They don't sell ointments but it will give them a good laugh.

For a mental cleanse, buy some heavy reading at Faulkner House Books and take it for a spin in one of Tennessee's favorite haunts, Hotel Monteleone's Carousel Bar. Visit Congo Square then walk cross the street for photos of legendary recording engineer Cosimo Matassa in his former studio, now a laundromat. Another way to pay homage is to tip the hell out of New Orleans musicians including the Paulin Brothers (pictured above). Visit Palm Court where the 101 year old Lionel Ferbos still gigs on occasion. The philanthropically inclined can check out the Musicians Village, former home of the late, great Bob French. You could be lucky enough to run into Musicians Village resident Smokey Johnson, godfather of the second line beat, holding court. And back to sports, the NFL Experience kicks off at Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

*The Home Stretch:* Some of the following events are invitation only with media registration still being accepted. Others, like the riverfront concert series, are free.

*Thursday*: The Big Easy Super Lounge with Willie Roaf at the US Mint; Woldenberg Park concert series kickoff; Madden Bowl with Lil Wayne at Bud Light Hotel; Micah McKee and Little Maker CD Release at the Blue Nile.

*Friday*: Super Bowl Breakfast at The Hyatt Regency honoring Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys; Drew Brees Hurricane Sandy benefit at the House of Blues with Nelly and Swizz Beatz; VH1 Best Super Bowl Party Ever featuring Train at the Sugar Mill.

*Saturday*: Lil Wayne at GQ Party The Elms Mansion; Stevie Wonder at the Budweiser Hotel bash; Miss America Mallory Hagan at Taste of the NFL benefit for national food banks at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

*Super Bowl Sunday:*
You made it.

State Cracks Down on Driver's License Fraud Patch Reading-North Reading, NJ --

Nearly 700 New Jersey residents could face criminal charges for obtaining New Jersey driver’s licenses using false identities, state officials announced Tuesday.

Officials are touting the new high-tech facial recognition software, dubbed “Operation Facial Scrub,” to enforce the crackdown, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa and Motor Vehicle Commission Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez said.

The effort has resulted in more than 1,800 license suspensions thus far, officials said.

More than 600 potential criminal cases have been referred to the attorney general’s office since the program began in December 2011. Of those cases, Chiesa announced the first wave of 38 criminal prosecutions today – including a Morristown resident, an Englewood resident and a Newark resident - and said more than 669 potential criminal cases have been referred to the attorney general’s office.

The software is designed to study the MVC’s 19-million photo record database to identify any duplicative photo records that may indicate administrative errors or customer fraud.

Last year, MVC security staff began to analyze the results after more than 600,000 matches were reviewed.

“A driver’s license is a powerful document that enables the holder to open financial accounts, obtain and drive motor vehicles, and board airplanes,” Chiesa said. “We know the 9/11 terrorists had fraudulent licenses from other states. By detecting individuals who have false licenses, law enforcement can potentially uncover other types of crime that these individuals may be involved in, including identity theft, financial fraud and even terrorism.”

“Those of us in business and government who regularly handle sensitive information always talk about weeding out fraud and abuse,” Martinez said. “This security tool really provides us with that extra edge to thoroughly comb through our records and identify everything from simple record errors to more egregious acts of fraud.”

“Our first 38 criminal prosecutions in Operation Facial Scrub include truck and bus drivers who have no business being on our roadways and registered sex offenders who tried to hide their criminal pasts,” said Director Stephen J. Taylor of the Division of Criminal Justice.  “We will continue to work with the Motor Vehicle Commission and our law enforcement partners to detect and aggressively prosecute criminals who obtain licenses using false identities.”

Officials say the arrested men include:
*
◆ **Jorge Trujillo, *50, of Morristown. Trujillo allegedly used false information to obtain a commercial driver’s license. He was indicted on the current charges on Nov. 30, 2012 on four counts each of using personal identifying information of another in the second degree and tampering with public records in the third degree.

*◆ **Ramon Hazell, *63, of Englewood. Hazell was charged in three driving under the influence charges. He was indicted on the current charges on Jan. 11, 2013 for using personal identifying information of another in the second degree and tampering with public records in the third degree.
*◆ **Jose Marte,* 50, of Newark. Marte currently has three license suspensions. He was indicted on the current charges on Nov. 14, 2012 for using personal identifying information of another in the second degree and tampering with public records in the third degree.

The second-degree charges against the defendants carry a sentence of five to 10 years in state prison and a fine of up to $150,000, while the third-degree charges carry a sentence of three to five years in state prison and a $15,000 fine. Reported by Patch 1 day ago.
